A quick, shameful story -- When I was in Junior High my church youth group used to attend a conference at Vanderbilt every year in March (it was held during Spring Break in Memorial Gym). I went to church with a bunch of UT fans and I think UT had just beaten Vandy in basketball or something. Anyhow, although I had no preference one way or the other, I joined in with the UT fans on my church bus, singing Rocky Top out the windows as we drove through campus. I regret that more than any other heinous act I may have commited before or since.
But I digress.
I went to a few games while I was in college. I saw us come close numerous times to teams like Alabama and Tennessee. I also watched us beat Georgia during my last Homecoming at Vandy.
I drove from Pensacola to Auburn to stand in the rain and watch VU get beat. I drove from Chattanooga to Nashville to stand in the rain and watch VU get beat.
I don't know exactly when Vanderbilt football became such a hobby/obsession for me, but I found this website just as I was getting into it and I become more emotionally invested in our team every season.
I think when I realized that our team had potential and that one day we would shock the world (still waiting), I decided to be a sold-out Vandy fan in advance. I may take my shots over the years, as I know many of you old timers have, since I live in big orange country with strong representation by Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia. But I know that one day it will all be worth it. It will, won't it?
My favorite players on Offense, Defense, and Special Teams are McGrath, Winborn, and Rock, respectively. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Mike Martin & Jon Shaub over the next few years.
I live in Chattanooga with my wife and dachsund. Football puts my wife to sleep, but she tolerates the way our schedules revolve around VU football between Labor Day and December 1. The dachsund is slightly more tolerant of the Game, as she will lay on my lap in relative peace while I watch (until I leap to my feet and howl in celebration of a TD, thus scaring her halfway to doggie heaven).
I'm a mechanical engineer for a company that makes carpet tufting machines. During the weekends I'm also an amateur comedian and have just started learning the bass guitar. Both of these weekend activities are for my church, which is my other hobby.
All of my friends here locally are Tennessee fans. My dad is a Tennessee fan. One of my sisters is a Tennessee grad. Unlike many of you, I don't HATE Tennessee (except for when they play Vandy). I usually don't mind seeing them succeed, as long as it's advantageous to VU. But I'll never wear orange or get too excited about them. I do have my priorities straight.
And when we DO beat Tennessee I plan to deck myself out in Black & Gold and become many of my best friends' worst nightmare. bio mainbio main
